For James Yeow, Director of Propellyst, the foundation of leadership is built on simple but timeless principles: generosity attracts people, self-discipline earns respect, tolerance wins hearts, and leading by example inspires others. These values have guided every step of his journey as a husband, father, and entrepreneur.

If he had to define his entrepreneurial path in one word, it would be faith. To James, faith means the courage to take the next step even when the outcome is uncertain. He believes that “you do not have to see the whole flight of stairs to take the first step.” This belief gave him the strength to face rejection, overcome failures, and continue moving forward despite challenges.

His story serves as a reminder that perseverance and belief in one’s purpose can transform even the most uncertain beginnings into meaningful success.

The Early Lessons that Shaped His Drive

James grew up in a traditional Teochew household with four siblings and parents who embodied hard work and resilience. His father, though illiterate, was a businessman who ventured into multiple trades throughout his life. He ran an aquarium, a clothing store, and later a Chinese physician’s clinic, always finding ways to provide for the family.

From a young age, James witnessed his parents working hand in hand to transform raw materials into finished products. His mother sewed clothing while his father sold them to eager customers. This experience taught him that true business success is not only about profit but about building relationships, trust, and creativity.

While his father did not place great importance on formal education, James grew up among siblings who were people-oriented and naturally entrepreneurial. Their influence taught him the value of respect, empathy, and innovation. From his family, he learned that adaptability is essential when resources are limited, and resilience is the key to progress.

His father’s ability to raise five children while providing for both his wife and mother left an enduring mark. James often says that his father’s example became the model for his own perseverance. Just as Singapore built itself on determination and adaptability, James learned that progress always begins with grit and faith.

Discovering Purpose Through Entrepreneurship

The first spark of entrepreneurship came during James’ national service. Working long hours at part-time jobs, he realised that exchanging time for money did not fulfil him. What inspired him more was helping others grow. He discovered this passion when he began training fellow financial advisers, sharing insights that helped them close deals and improve their skills.

“I believe I have a gift for training financial advisers. My sharing often inspires them,” he recalls. What started as a personal interest evolved into a lifelong mission to empower others.

However, following this dream was not easy. Supporting a large family while building a new venture required courage and conviction. James credits his wife and co-founder, June Lim, for her strength and belief in their shared vision. Together, they worked tirelessly to grow both their family and the business, finding balance through mutual trust and persistence.

This passion for helping advisers eventually led to the development of Adviser Cards, a platform that supports financial advisers in their professional growth and client engagement. Through Adviser Cards, James extends his mission to provide advisers with the tools and resources they need to connect meaningfully with clients and build lasting trust.

Turning Obstacles into Opportunities

James’ early years as an entrepreneur were filled with challenges. Between 2023 and 2024, he met more than 200 financial advisers and secured only 63 clients, generating less than $70,000 in revenue. These numbers could have discouraged anyone, but James viewed them as stepping stones rather than setbacks.

In 2025, his efforts began to pay off. Propellyst grew to support over 300 advisers, 80 clients, and a volunteer network of 30, with revenue surpassing $400,000. More than the results, what mattered most to him was the resilience built through more than 500 failed attempts. Each rejection strengthened his resolve.

He still remembers his first client, Jen Lau, who agreed to sign up after a single conversation, even without seeing the finished product. That small moment of trust reminded him that perseverance, belief, and genuine connection are the foundations of success.

The Power of Giving Back

For James, the true measure of success lies in how much one contributes to others. From the very beginning, he built Propellyst around a culture of giving back.

He encouraged his students to return as mentors, helping newer advisers find their footing. “Everyone has the same mindset of giving back,” he explains. This mentorship approach created a tight-knit community where people supported one another not for personal gain but for shared progress.

Even when financial rewards were limited, James prioritised coaching, growth, and emotional support. Those who believed in his vision gave their time and effort freely, knowing they were part of something meaningful.

This sense of collective purpose became the heart of Propellyst. It transformed the company into more than a workplace; it became a space for mentorship, belonging, and growth. The principle of giving back not only strengthened the organisation but also reflected Singapore’s own spirit of unity and contribution.

Leadership Through Collaboration

As Propellyst expanded, James faced a new challenge: how to grow sustainably without losing the company’s values. He knew that the next stage of success required shared leadership.

The breakthrough came during a meeting with his core group, the Trendsetters: Karen Kee, Gary Peh, Danny Chang, Jocelyn Nai, and Clarence Pang. Instead of shouldering all the responsibilities himself, James proposed a shared investment model for a new marketing project. Everyone would contribute financially and share in the outcomes transparently.

That decision shifted the company’s trajectory. Propellyst evolved from being a founder-led organisation to a collaborative mission. The team’s shared ownership and commitment to transparency strengthened trust and created momentum for future growth.

Despite moments of self-doubt, James refused to let fear take over. “There are no what-ifs and no turning back,” he says. “There is only one outcome, which is to achieve the goal.” By speaking openly about his doubts and challenges, he built authenticity and connection with his team. Together, they turned vulnerability into strength.

Enduring Strength Through Resilience

For James, resilience is not about enduring hardship in silence. It is about using every challenge as a chance to grow stronger. “All the moments of feeling lost and defeated are meant to build resilience,” he reflects.

This belief defines the culture at Propellyst. The company values persistence, integrity, and teamwork above all else. “When we have the right culture, we attract the right people. With the right ethics, people will stand for us against rumours and naysayers,” he explains.

He believes that culture is the foundation of long-term success. It sustains a business beyond numbers or milestones. In his view, true leadership means creating an environment where people are motivated not by fear or reward but by shared values and a clear sense of purpose.

Reflecting Singapore’s Journey of Growth

As Singapore marks 60 years of nationhood, James sees parallels between the nation’s progress and his own entrepreneurial path. “Singapore is a trusted brand. I am so fortunate to be building my legacy here,” he says.

Just as Singapore rose through trust, discipline, and adaptability, James believes that financial advisers can uplift their profession through credibility and ethics. His mission is to help advisers rebuild confidence in their role as trusted partners in their clients’ financial journeys.

He believes that growth should be measured not by speed but by how much people improve and uplift others. “Personal growth propels business growth,” he says. For James, business is a means of shaping people, culture, and purpose rather than chasing profit.

His belief aligns with the spirit of Singapore’s progress: that success comes from collective effort and a commitment to integrity.

Propelling the Future with Faith and Purpose

Looking back, James’ journey is one of faith, perseverance, and service. From his humble beginnings in a Teochew family to leading a thriving organisation, he has stayed true to his values of generosity, discipline, and resilience.

Through Propellyst, he continues to nurture a culture where people learn, lead, and give back. His story shows that true success lies not in individual achievement but in the lives we touch and the values we uphold.

As he often reminds his team, “Everything is possible.” His life stands as proof that with faith, courage, and a spirit of giving, even the smallest beginnings can lead to extraordinary outcomes.
