The years 2020 and 2021 were marked by global upheaval, and the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted daily life, business operations, and community gatherings across the world. The Spirit of Enterprise (SOE) was no exception. But true to our name, we responded not with retreat but with resilience.
A quiet period with purpose
Due to government restrictions and safety concerns, we had to put our regular line-up of forums, networking sessions, and award galas on hold. However, this pause did not equate to inactivity. Behind the scenes, SOE was reimagining our role in a world shaped by digital engagement and evolving entrepreneurship.
These two years also gave SOE an opportunity to reflect on how best to continue championing entrepreneurial excellence while preparing for a stronger comeback.
SOE Awards 2020/2021 Ceremony & Dinner
In a combined ceremony, SOE paid tribute to outstanding entrepreneurs from both 2020 and 2021 in a long-awaited event. The gala finally brought together honourees, students, and mentors, celebrating the perseverance of the entrepreneurial spirit through the storm. With more than two years of resilience behind them, the attendees made the event one of the most meaningful in SOE’s history.
Held at the iconic Ritz-Carlton, the event was a celebration of perseverance. The honourees had overcome immense hurdles during the pandemic years, adapting business models, embracing digitalisation, and continuing to serve their communities. Many of these entrepreneurs became pillars of strength during the crisis, showing leadership in a time of chaos.
The evening featured stories of innovation, adaptation, and impact. From F&B businesses that pivoted to delivery and cloud kitchens, to service providers who launched digital offerings, the diversity of success stories proved that entrepreneurship thrives even in uncertainty.
Minister of State Ms Low Yen Ling delivered a heartfelt speech, commending the entrepreneurs for demonstrating courage and creativity. Her presence reaffirmed SOE’s important role in shaping a resilient business ecosystem in Singapore.
Beyond the awards, the dinner provided a moment of reunion, a chance for entrepreneurs and SOE supporters to reconnect in person after years of social distancing. Conversations were rich with shared learnings and renewed purpose.
Date: 25 May 2022 (held post-COVID restrictions)
Venue: The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore
Guest of Honour: Ms Low Yen Ling, Minister of State, Ministry of Trade and Industry, and Culture, Community and Youth
Conclusion
Though 2020 and 2021 were quieter years in terms of physical events, they were full of quiet strength and reflection. SOE used this time to regroup, reconnect with our mission, and emerge with renewed focus. The combined awards ceremony in 2022 served as both closure and a new beginning, a testament to what the entrepreneurial community can achieve in the face of uncertainty.
